Since 1984, Ellen Thomas has been a full-time, strictly volunteer anti-nuclear, peace, and justice activist. She currently serves as Co-Chair of the Disarm/End Wars Committee for the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (US) and Director of the Proposition One Campaign.
Alongside her late husband, William Thomas, she co-founded the Proposition One Committee in 1990, pioneering DC Initiative 37—the foundation for the federal “Nuclear Abolition and Economic and Energy Conversion Act.” For nearly two decades, she helped maintain and legally defend the continuous Peace Park Antinuclear Vigil outside the White House, surviving imprisonment and legal battles to protect First Amendment rights.
An educator, writer, and multimedia archivist, Ellen has campaigned globally, edited NucNews since 1998, and dedicated years to homeless advocacy and sanctuary. Residing in Tryon, NC, she remains fiercely dedicated to her lifelong mission: “trying to make the world a safer place for our children.”
