Barbara’s artistic journey began in Montreal, Canada where artist and family friend, A.O. Ferworn, established his summer “Cercle des Artistes” and reached out to old and young in the small community of Rawdon, Quebec through his art classes and shows.
As an adult in Chicago, when she left the practice of law, she returned to drawing and painting with renowned watercolorist Alain Gavin, who conveyed an indelible sense of wonder to his students with the precise techniques of British Watercolor, as well as with his weekly art history and critique sessions.
Together with three friends Barbara established the Treetop Studio in Winnetka, Illinois where the group worked, studied, and held exhibitions of their art in oils, watercolor, and mixed media for several years. Her study of painting and drawing continued at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago where the spark of Renaissance art history and her love of portraiture resurfaced. Only recently has she begun her journey into sculpture. The 3D aspect of portraits and the human form is irresistible, and she continues to draw with local artists in Tryon and the surrounding area with weekly head studies and live models.
She aspires to turn marks, forms, gestures and moods into universal stories with timeless symbolic meaning.
She currently splits her time between Columbus, NC and New Orleans.
